OpenAI has reportedly secured another $8.3 billion in funding, for a valuation of $300 billion. The new investment is a major coup for the firm, coming months ahead of schedule in its plan to secure $40 billion in funding by the end of the year. The company previously secured a $30 billion commitment from SoftBank if certain goals are achieved by the start of 2026. The funding news comes as ChatGPT is close to reaching 700 million weekly active users, including a significant jump in new users over the last several months. YouTube is testing a new collaboration feature that allows creators to link other users’ content to their videos, enabling recommendations to followers of each account as a means of driving visibility and engagement. Creators can tag collaborators, who must approve before their name and audience reach is added to the clip. In addition to a collective graphic, a designation along the lines of “and three more” appears next to the name of the host account holder. When clicked, the “more” opens to display the hot-linked channels that are collaborating. Instagram and TikTok already have similar features in place. TikTok has released a host of new features, including a Community Notes-style fact-checking tool called Footnotes. Enhanced parental controls bring the ability to block specific accounts to guardians who are linked to minors’ accounts using the Family Pairing feature. Parents also now receive notifications when minors with whom they are paired upload new videos, stories or photos. Creator enhancements include a new TikTok Live comment tool that can block words from comment threads entirely. A bipartisan group of U.S. senators has introduced what they’re calling “a discussion draft” of a new anti-piracy bill, the Block Bad Electronic Art and Recording Distributors Act of 2025, known as the Block BEARD Act. Inspired by laws in the UK and Australia, Block BEARD proposes to allow federal courts to order ISPs to block foreign piracy websites that violate U.S. copyright law. It would provide copyright owners who have had their property stolen a new form of relief by having the courts interrupt foreign online piracy operations, preventing them from making unauthorized content available to U.S. households. Google has upgraded Gemini 2.5 with a feature called Deep Think that “could be a powerful tool in creative problem solving,” according to the company. Deep Think uses parallel thinking techniques, letting Gemini “generate many ideas at once and consider them simultaneously, even revising or combining different ideas over time, before arriving at the best answer.” Its ability to reason through highly complex problems makes Deep Think mode a powerful tool for researchers, Google says, adding that it also excels at coding. China’s DJI, the world’s leading consumer drone company, has released the Osmo 360 camera globally. The move comes as Shenzhen-based camera company Insta360 announced it is entering the drone business with a 360-degree consumer drone. DJI says the Osmo 360 raises the bar on surround imaging as “the first 360 camera to shoot ultra-high-spec 8K/50fps 360-degree video and is the only 360 camera that can shoot continuously for 100 minutes in 8K/30fps.” While both the Insta360 X5 and KanDao’s QooCam 8K cameras match the resolution, neither model features the 50fps capability. Apple posted quarterly revenue of $94 billion, up 10 percent year-over-year, the largest quarterly growth spurt for the tech giant since December 2021. Net profit of $23.4 billion was a new record for the June quarter and up nearly 9 percent from the prior year. Sales of Apple’s iPhones totaled $44.6 billion for the quarter, a 13 percent increase year-over-year, with growth posted across “every geographic segment” and a record number of upgrades as customers raced to beat the impact of anticipated tariffs, according to the company. Amazon Q2 earnings outperformed analyst expectations, but a strong performance wasn’t enough to quell market fears in light of a gloomy forecast and Amazon Web Services growth seen as anemic, at +17.5 percent, which was slower than the expansion of its competitors Microsoft Azure (+39 percent) and Google Cloud (+32 percent). Amazon’s Q2 profit was $18.2 billion, up nearly 30 percent on revenue of $167.7 billion, a 13 percent gain year-over-year. Advertising income of $15.7 billion was almost $1 billion more than StreetAccount’s estimate of $14.9 billion. Adobe competitor Figma went public Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange in a debut that saw the price of its first public trade nearly triple from the $33 per share the company and its institutional investors offered it up at, to $85, for a valuation of about $50 billion, well beyond the $20 billion the San Francisco-based design software startup agreed to in 2022 to essentially be acquired by Adobe. Meta Platform reported another strong quarter, with profit up 36 percent to $18 billion on revenue of $47.5 billion, a 22 percent increase. Justifying to investors why the company spent billions restructuring AI operations as part of the new AI Superintelligence Lab and recruiting talent to run it, company CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized his desire “to build personal superintelligence for everyone in the world.” Zuckerberg said he believes AI superintelligence “has the potential to begin an exciting new era of individual empowerment.” Meta plans to more than double spending to build AI infrastructure, including server-filled data centers, and initiatives supporting model training and cloud computing. The $88 billion Microsoft invested in building data centers for artificial intelligence and cloud computing over the past year seems to be paying off with the company reporting profit of $101 billion for fiscal year 2025, which ended June 30. Amazon’s Alexa Fund VC has made an investment in San Francisco-based startup Fable, which this week launched Showrunner, a generative AI model with an app that lets people create animated TV shows using text prompts. Showrunner has been in a closed alpha test involving about 10,000 users. Initially, Fable is making Showrunner available for free, but plans to eventually price it at $10-$20 monthly for credits enabling creation of TV-style content on Discord. The Showrunner-generated content will be shareable on social media sites including YouTube. Specific terms of Amazon’s investment have yet to be disclosed. New York-based Runway AI has introduced a sophisticated video model called Aleph that can perform a wide range of edits from text prompts — adding, removing and transforming objects; generating various angles on a scene; or modifying style and lighting, among other things. Aimed at streamlining post-production, Runway calls Aleph an “in-context video model,” meaning it is designed to work with existing visual material rather than generating imagery from scratch. Google’s YouTube is adding new age-verification methods designed to protect teens. The streaming video platform is using AI to interpret “a variety of signals” to identify users under 18, regardless of the birthdate used to create the account. If the system identifies a user as a teen, age-appropriate protections will automatically take effect. These include disabling personalized advertising, restricted recommendations, limits on repetitive viewing of certain content and screen-time reminders. If the system incorrectly categorizes a user as under 18, they will have the option to correct the situation with a credit card or a government ID.
