On December 2, senior media executives gathered on Zoom to answer questions from USC students about industry trends, company strategies and career direction. The students had submitted winning pitches in the ETC@USC Future of Themed Experiences Challenge and their reward was time with the media executives. Supported by the City of Los Angeles, I3 is focused on the Internet as a way to interconnect people and objects via sensors, cameras, actuators and community-based IoT networks. As OTT becomes an increasingly compelling delivery platform, engineers born and bred on over-the-air, cable and satellite technologies are closely examining various schemes for deployment. On SMPTE 2015’s second day, sessions focused on that topic, featuring panelists from Prime Focus Technologies, Comcast and USC Viterbi School of Engineering. The big take-away was that going over-the-top might take some planning but it’s a worthwhile route to take, to engage viewers and provide more data for advertisers. Researchers from three international universities working on twisting radio beams for transferring data have achieved transmission speeds of 32 gigabits per second — 30 times faster than current 4G LTE wireless technology. The project, which includes scientists from University of Glasgow and Tel Aviv University, is led by Professor Alan Willner of USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering. Mobile operators should be interested in the technique to supply faster networks and address congestion created by too many users.
