Sony Interactive Spins Out New PlayStation Studio teamLFG

Former Bungie developers have formed teamLFG, a PlayStation studio housed within Sony Interactive Entertainment. Hermen Hulst, CEO of the Sony Interactive Entertainment Studio Business Group, said teamLFG has “rallied developers from across the industry to bring to life an ambitious incubation project” that the company is “very excited about.” The first game from teamLFG will see players inhabit “a lighthearted, comedic world set in brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe,” the principals hinted, noting it was a multiplayer actioner “that draws inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games.”

“The LFG in teamLFG stands for ‘Looking For Group,’ as per the online vernacular, and it sounds like social gaming is a big part of the games it wants to make,” writes IGN.

“We want our players to feel excited when they log on to discover their teammates already hanging out online,” the new studio expressed in a PlayStation blog post that promises “immersive multiplayer worlds,” built with input from “our communities, inviting players to be a part of our development process through early access playtests.”

The Verge reports that “teamLFG is part of PlayStation’s push into live service games, which has been scaled back from its original ambitious plan,” and has faced setbacks.

Sony acquired Bungie for roughly $3.7 billion in 2022. Last year, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons said the studio was working with PlayStation leadership to spin out an  incubation project, explains The Verge, which has good things to say about Bungie’s upcoming “Marathon” release, saying the multiplayer shooter is “slick-looking.”

Headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, teamLFG has creators onsite as well as remote staff throughout the U.S. and Canada.
