Disney Accelerator Startups Focus on Web3, Immersive Tech

The Walt Disney Company has announced the six companies to participate in its latest business accelerator program. The 2022 Disney Accelerator focuses on tech startups involved in Web3 and immersive experiences through work in augmented reality, NFTs and artificial intelligence. The six participants are: Flickplay, Inworld, Lockerverse, Obsess, Polygon and Red 6. Disney will offer participants investment capital, co-working space, guidance from Disney’s senior leadership team and an executive mentor. The Accelerator program will conclude with a Demo Day this fall at the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, California.

According to the Disney Accelerator site, the program is “empowering innovative collaborations with The Walt Disney Company” and “is open to venture-backed, growth-stage startups with a vision for making an impact on the future of technology and entertainment.”

Disney described the 2022 participants in a press release:

  • Flickplay is a Web3 social app that enables users to discover NFTs tied to real-world locations that they can experience and share via AR.
  • Inworld allows users to create interactive, AI-driven characters for immersive experiences.
  • Lockerverse is a Web3 platform that empowers creators and brands to tell culture-defining stories and deliver unique access and experiences.
  • Obsess is an experiential e-commerce platform that enables brands to create immersive 3D virtual stores on their websites and on metaverse platforms.
  • Polygon is a scalable blockchain network that allows developers and enterprises to build Web3 experiences.
  • Red 6 is an AR company that has created a patented headset and interface that works outdoors in dynamic, high-performance environments.

Polygon, the only blockchain firm on the list, “is one of the leading L2 Ethereum scaling solutions in the market allowing developers to launch massive dApps like blockchain games and NFT marketplaces without compromising on the speed and low gas fees offered by proof-of-stake L1 blockchains,” writes NFTgators.

In January, Disney launched its own Web3 technology for “metaverse theme parks,” NFTgators reports of Disney’s “patented technology that allows users to interact with 3D objects without wearing a VR headset.”
