Apple TV Software Could Be Scheduled for Refresh Next Week

Apple did not unveil any updates to its Apple TV software or hardware during the company’s press event this week as many had expected. However, people familiar with Apple’s plans indicate that Apple TV is scheduled for software updates on September 18, the same day that the company plans to release its new iTunes Radio service and redesigned iOS 7 mobile operating software for download by iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners.

“The one new feature I’m aware of is a tweak to Apple’s AirPlay system,” writes Peter Kafka for AllThingsD. “The new software will allow people who have purchased content from Apple’s iTunes store to play that stuff on other people’s TVs, via its AirPlay system.”

“The key part is that they will be able to tell an Apple TV box they don’t own to stream the media they do own, directly from the cloud,” explains Kafka. “That’s a change from the current system, which requires users to download stuff to their iPhones and iPads and fling it to the TV from there. It also echoes the way Google’s new Chromecast device works.”

Little information is known regarding further specifics of the updates. Most outlets are merely quoting Kafka at this time. ETCentric will provide additional details as they become available.
