Music Companies Make Money from Fan-Made YouTube Videos

According to the annual Digital Music Report released this week by IFPI, which represents some 1,300 record companies worldwide, Google-owned YouTube is now the most popular music service in the world. Moreover, the recording industry is generating more revenue via advertising and royalties from fan-made mashups, lip-syncs and tributes on the popular video site than from officially-released music videos. MixBit Takes On Vine and Instagram with Video Sharing App

Chad Hurley and Steven Chen, the founders of YouTube, have released a new video creation and sharing app called MixBit. It is similar to other video apps such as Twitter’s Vine and Facebook’s Instagram. The app will allow users to capture 16 seconds of video, while Vine’s maximum is six seconds and Instagram’s limit is 15 seconds. MixBit is different from its competitors in that it allows video editing, but others may soon introduce this feature as well. CNN BuzzFeed to Launch Today: Targets 18-34 Demographic

In its effort to become a news destination for young adults, BuzzFeed announced it will debut “CNN BuzzFeed” today, a new YouTube channel based on CNN reporting. It plans to feature current and archival content (about three videos a week to start), designed for sharing via social media platforms. BuzzFeed already has several YouTube channels, but the CNN partnership marks its most comprehensive with a traditional media company.
