Super Bowl XLIX Tops Broadcast TV and Social Media Records

Early numbers indicate that last night’s Super Bowl broadcast was a big win for NBC. According to NBC Sports, the New England Patriots’ 28-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks delivered a 49.7 overnight rating, which marks the highest in Super Bowl history. NBC says the total number of viewers will be announced later today, and could prove to be a new TV record. Twitter announced the evening marked the most-tweeted in Super Bowl history, with more than 28.4 million tweets referencing the game, Katy Perry’s halftime show and the commercials.

NFL_Super_Bowl_XLIX“Perry is the world’s most followed Twitter user (64.3 million and counting) and a popular, energetic female pop star who sings songs with catchy hooks,” reports USA Today. “She’s someone in the prime of her career and adored by the NFL’s target demographic: young people. Katy Perry is what a Super Bowl halftime show should be.”

According to Zap2it, the end of Perry’s performance was the third most tweeted moment of the evening. The most-mentioned players on Twitter were Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman of the Patriots, and Marshawn Lynch, Russell Wilson and Chris Matthews of the Seahawks.

Not surprisingly, the most tweeted moment was the interception by New England’s Malcolm Butler at the end of the game, which generated 395,000 tweets per minute.

TiVo reports that Budweiser’s “Lost Dog” spot was the most-watched commercial of the evening. The New York Post has videos of the Top 10 most-watched ads, including Joyful Heart Foundation’s “911 Delivery,” Doritos’ “Middle Seat” and Nationwide Insurance’s “Invisible Mindy Kaling.”
