Redbox Instant by Verizon App Now Available on Google TV

Google announced this week that the newly launched Redbox Instant by Verizon app is now ready for Google TV. Available in the Google Play market, owners of second generation hardware will be able to make full use of the app’s streaming capabilities (as detailed at the Google I/O conference, only newer devices have the necessary DRM support). Google Play is currently offering a one month free trial for new subscribers.

“The app delivers the full Redbox Instant by Verizon experience right to your living room,” explains the Google TV blog. “This includes access to your subscription disc and streaming package, and ability to purchase and rent the latest new releases from the Redbox Instant store.”

In addition to browsing and bookmarking capabilities, users can instantly stream movies in the subscription plan, purchase or rent new releases on demand (even without a subscription), or reserve discs at local kiosks.

“The Redbox Instant app for Google TV is in the Google Play market, however only owners of second gen hardware will be able to make full use of it,” reports Engadget. “As the folks at Google TV Friends found, it can be side loaded on the Logitech Revue for example and even play previews, however it won’t rent any movies. At Google I/O Redbox explained to GigaOM that support would be restricted, while showing off a newer version of the app that will be released after the Jelly Bean Google TV update hits and mentioning a Roku version on the way.”

Redbox Instant first launched on select Samsung TVs and Blu-ray players, PCs and mobile devices, and then added support for Xbox 360 and select LG Smart TVs. Acording to Google TV Friends, it is “now available for the Sony NSZ-GS7 and the Vizio Co-Star Google TV.”
