Netflix and Hulu Plus Most Popular with Mobile TV Viewers

The majority of television content viewed on mobile devices is accessed through Netflix and Hulu Plus, rather than via networks or pay TV providers, suggests a new study commissioned by the Council for Research Excellence (funded by Nielsen). About 64 percent of shows watched on smartphones and 54 percent on tablets were accessed through online video-subscription services, while broadcast and cable websites and apps only accounted for 26 percent of TV viewed on mobile devices.

Additionally, cable and satellite provider apps were accessed by 11 percent of respondents who say they view TV shows on tablets and 10 percent on smartphones.

“TV nets are starting to offer more content on mobile devices, but under the prevailing ‘TV Everywhere’ model live programming and most on-demand episodes are available only to customers of participating pay TV providers,” reports Variety. “ABC, for example, debuted a test version of its Watch ABC app with a broader rollout set for July.”

“Today, watching TV shows on mobile devices remains relatively small,” notes the article. “Among all TV viewers, only 2 percent of all TV hours logged were on mobile devices. About 40.9 million Americans today watch video on mobile devices, according to Nielsen.”

Interestingly, most mobile video viewing (82 percent for tablets and 64 percent of smartphones) seems to be taking place inside the home. Reasons, according to the study: “more convenient” (49 percent), ability to “watch multiple episodes” (13 percent), “fewer ads” (5 percent).
