CES 2013: RCA Wins One for the Nipper with Mobile TV Tab

The debut of the RCA Mobile TV Tablet made CES attendees sit up and take notice. Sporting an 8-inch HD (1024 × 768) screen, the device combines mobile DTV with over-the-air TV reception and doubles as a touch-based Android tablet. Equipped with dual cameras, Wi-Fi and GPS functionality, it is also being touted as the first dual-tuner mobile TV as well as the first integrated unit to feature the Mobile Content Venture consortium’s Dyle mobile TV service.

In total, RCA says the device has access to 130 mobile TV stations nationally and its integrated Android browser function would also allow access to services like UltraViolet and Hulu for movies and entertainment.

The unit carries a $299 price tag, and is expected to be available to consumers in March. RCA claims consumers who try mobile TV watch television with greater frequency and use it not only for entertainment purposes, but to tune in locally for news and sports.

Chris Lee, VP marketing for Digital Stream, which designed and manufactures the RCA Mobile TV Tablet, said he looks forward to “more advanced services made possible by the addition of this Mobile TV Tablet.”

With its dual Dyle mobile TV and ATSC Mobile DTV tuners, RCA is touting its Mobile TV Tablet as “ideal for virtually any viewing environment — from the kitchen countertop to the back seat of a car.”

Dyle is now on-the-air in more than 35 markets, delivering popular network TV shows and local news. The RCA Mobile TV Tablet also receives Mobile Digital TV channels from broadcasters not affiliated with Dyle.

The RCA DMT580D is a fully functional Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n Android tablet featuring a Cortex A5 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of on-board Flash memory. Additional features include language selection, integrated GPS, and USB, MicroUSB, MicroSD, and HDMI connectivity. It weighs 1.4 pounds and has a battery life up to four hours in mobile TV mode or up to 10 hours when Web browsing.

A TV-only version, the RCA DMT2704, is priced at $149 and will also be available in the spring.
